Frequently asked questions about moving in Switzerland

Everything you need to know about changing your address when you move.

What is a move notification and who is required to submit one?

In Switzerland, every person is required to register their new residence with the relevant residents' register within 14 days of moving in. This obligation applies to Swiss citizens as well as foreigners residing in Switzerland. In addition, it is advisable to promptly notify your health insurer, Swiss Post and private service providers.

Which authorities do I need to notify of my move in Switzerland?

A complete move notification typically includes: residents' register of the new municipality (mandatory), Swiss Post (mail forwarding), health insurer, insurances (liability, household, life), banks and telecom providers. Adresio bundles these notifications into a single step. If you own a vehicle, you additionally report the change of address yourself to the cantonal road traffic office.

How long do I have to re-register my residence?

By law, you have 14 days in most cantons to register with the residents' register. Deadlines may vary slightly by canton — some municipalities accept up to 30 days. For private service providers there is no legal deadline, but prompt notification prevents problems with your post.

How much does a move notification cost in Switzerland?

The official registration with the residents' register involves an administrative fee depending on the municipality — with Adresio that fee is included in the price, so you pay nothing extra at the municipality. Swiss Post's mail forwarding is fee-based, depending on duration and scope, and is paid directly to Swiss Post. Adresio itself costs a one-time CHF 49–79, depending on the package.

What is the difference between eUmzug (admin.ch) and Adresio?

eUmzug is the official government channel and covers only the residents' register. Adresio goes further: Swiss Post mail forwarding, health insurer, insurances, telecom and banks — all in one step, without account creation.

How do I update my address with Swiss Post (mail forwarding)?

You can request mail forwarding directly on post.ch or have it handled through Adresio. The forwarding order ensures all letters sent to your old address are automatically forwarded to the new one. Adresio initiates this as part of the Comfort or Carefree package.

Do I also need to change my address at the road traffic office?

Yes. After moving, you must have your driving licence and vehicle registration updated. The road traffic office is organised by canton, so you file the change directly with the office of your new canton. Adresio does not currently offer this service — you handle it yourself.

Do I need to inform my health insurer about my move?

Yes. Your health insurer needs your current address so that premium invoices and reimbursements are correctly delivered. A change of canton can also affect your premium, as health insurance premiums are graduated by canton. Adresio notifies your health insurer automatically.

What happens if I forget or notify too late?

Late registration with the residents' register may result in reminders or fines (up to CHF 300) depending on the municipality. For private service providers there are no penalties, but misrouted post and missed invoices can result.

Can I complete the address change entirely online?

For Adresio's services: yes. The residents' register accepts notifications via eUmzugCH, and Adresio bundles the rest — you fill in one form. Offices outside our range of services, such as the road traffic office, still require a separate step in some cantons.

What is mail forwarding and do I need it?

Mail forwarding automatically redirects post from your old address to the new one. Particularly useful in the first weeks after moving — recommended for at least 3 months. Adresio guides you step by step through the notification to Swiss Post in every package.

How exactly does Adresio work?

You enter your old and new postcode and your moving date. Then you choose which organisations you want to notify — Adresio automatically calculates your price. You pay securely with TWINT or credit card. Afterwards you enter your personal details once. Adresio forwards everything and you receive a confirmation per notification directly by email.

Is my data safe with Adresio?

Yes. Adresio processes and stores data exclusively in Switzerland. The AHV/AVS number is stored with separate encryption and never transmitted in plain text. We only collect what your notifications require. Adresio is fully DSG and GDPR compliant.

What does Adresio cost and are there hidden fees?

Adresio is a one-time payment with no subscription: Simple CHF 49 (residents' register, Post, health insurer), Comfort CHF 59 (plus insurances and telecom), Carefree CHF 79 (plus bank). All prices include VAT and the authority's registration fee. If you add a service from a higher package, you see the new price before you pay. The 14-day carefree guarantee applies in case of failure.

Does the registration also cover my children and pets?

Yes. The residents' register registers children in the same household and pets together with you — no add-on required. Adults with their own contracts (partner, flatmates) submit their health insurer, bank or telecom contracts through their own order.
